Lower Nueces River: Implementing a Watershed Protection Plan with a Septic System Assistance Program

This project will implement a management measure identified in the Lower Nueces River Watershed Protection Plan (WPP) to address malfunctioning septic systems.

Background

In 2009, the Nueces River Authority (NRA) prepared a Source Water Protection plan for the City of Corpus Christi to address turbidity in its water supply. In 2011, concerned citizens formed the Lower Nueces River Watershed Partnership and began working with the NRA to develop a WPP for the river segment below Lake Corpus Christi. This segment is impaired for total dissolved solids. Although the segment is not impaired for bacteria, the Nueces River Authority’s 2013 Basin Summary Report identified an increasing trend in bacteria concentrations there. The EPA accepted the WPP in 2016.

Project Description

This project will develop a volunteer septic system inspection program and offer technical and financial assistance to qualifying homeowners for repair and/or replacement. Implementing this strategy will reduce bacterial and total dissolved solids loadings into the Lower Nueces River.
